Introduction: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) depends on several factors that positively influence the lives of children and adolescents. That is why healthy lifestyles, such as regular physical activity, reduced screen time, and good eating habits, are so important.
Objective: to establish anthropometric characteristics and correlate muscle strength with adiposity in secondary school adolescents from the department of Huila, located in southern Colombia.
Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 258 (51% women) adolescent schoolchildren. Anthropometric measurements were assessed according to the guidelines of the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK); grip strength was determined in both hands.
Results: Significant differences (p<0.05) were found by sex in height, waist-hip ratio (WHR), percentage of body fat (%F), dominant hand grip strength (DHS), non-dominant hand grip strength (NHSG) and muscle quality index (MQI).
Conclusions: Care must be taken to ensure that women improve their manual strength capacity and muscle quality, which will bring benefits in their lives in the short, medium, and long term.
