Introduction and Objective. Dermatoglyphics is a field of biogenetics that studies the fingerprint patterns of fingers and toes. It is used in both genetic analysis and identification processes. Furthermore, its relevance has been raised in identifying correlations between genotype and certain physical and athletic characteristics. Power, understood as the combination of strength and speed, is a determining ability in women's artistic gymnastics, making this discipline a suitable model for exploring such correlations. The main objective of this study was to analyze the correlation between the dermatoglyphic profile and power in the junior women's artistic gymnastics team from the department of Tolima, Colombia.
Methodology. The study adopted a quantitative, observational approach with a correlational and cross-sectional design. An inferential statistical analysis was performed to determine the levels of correlation between dermatoglyphic patterns and power variables measured through different jumping tests included in a specific power test.
Results. The results allowed us to characterize the dermatoglyphic profile of the gymnasts from the Tolima youth team, finding a significant correlation between these patterns and the power levels expressed in the different types of jumps evaluated. This association supports the possible relationship between the genetic characteristics reflected in dermatoglyphics and physical performance in power tests.
Conclusions. The study suggests that dermatoglyphic analysis can be a useful tool in identifying athletic talent, especially in disciplines where power is a key ability, such as women's artistic gymnastics. Furthermore, these findings could contribute to the design of more personalized training programs focused on optimizing athletic performance from a genetic and functional perspective.
