Introduction: Coaches’ well-being is crucial not only for their own health but also for the performance and holistic development of the athletes they train. However, the study of self-care variables influencing burnout in this group remains limited.
Objective: To explore the correlation between burnout, sleep quality, and chronotype in a sample of 22 coaches.
Methodology: The Burnout Inventory for Sports Coaches (IB-ED), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) were applied.
Results: The findings revealed moderate to high levels of burnout, with impaired sleep quality, particularly in terms of sleep latency. Significant associations were found between emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. Poor sleep quality was associated with higher emotional exhaustion and more years of experience. Although no significant differences were observed by sex or type of sport, coaches with a morning chronotype reported poorer sleep quality and lower personal accomplishment. Regression analyses indicated that sleep quality significantly predicts emotional exhaustion.
Discussion: These results are consistent with previous studies highlighting the correlation between poor sleep quality and burnout and reinforce evidence that emotional exhaustion is a central dimension of burnout in coaches. In contrast to findings in other populations, the morning chronotype in coaches was associated with lower well-being, suggesting specific characteristics of the coaching profession.
Conclusions: Promoting proper sleep hygiene and aligning circadian rhythms may be effective strategies to mitigate burnout among coaches. These findings emphasize the importance and need to improve sleep quality to manage stress and reduce burnout. Regulating sleep-wake rhythms by chronotype and encouraging sleep hygiene are recommended as preventive measures.
