Introduction: Motivation is important in sports performance. The Sports Motivation Scale (SMS-II) is a widely used instrument, but the validity of the SMS-II in different populations and performance levels is a question to be investigated.
Objective: to review the psychometric properties and adapt the Sports Motivation Scale, and to examine the evidence of convergent validity between the constructs of motivation (SMS-II) and optimal performance with the Flow (FSS) and Clutch (CSS) states, in Colombian athletes.
Methodology: through an instrumental design, a request was made to the authors of SMS-II, translation and counter-translation, evaluation by expert judges, and application of a pilot test, following the APA guidelines. A total of 333 Colombian athletes participated, through a purposive sample, aged 16-57 years (mean age = 23.6; SD = 8.1), 83 women (24.6%) and 250 men (75.0%).
Results: a confirmatory factor analysis was performed with the original factor structure, finding high goodness-of-fit indices and low error indices (GFI= 0.992, CFI = 0.992, TLI =0.990, RMSEA = 0.057), and high reliability indices were found (McDonald's Omega= 0.858, Cronbach's Alpha= 0.896 and GLB= 0.968). A relationship was found between the SMS-II and measures of FSS and CSS states.
Discussion: the metric quality of the SMS-II scale is similar to previous studies, which report the same factorial structure, and also high indicators of reliability and internal consistency.
Conclusions: the Sports Motivation Scale (SMS-II Sports Motivation Scale) is a valid, reliable and consistent instrument for the evaluation of sports motivation in Colombian athletes.
