Introduction: competitive State Anxiety (CSA) and burnout are considered variables that hinder optimal sports performance; therefore, it is important to generate research focused on psychological interventions so that players have appropriate tools and can use them effectively.
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a cognitive-behavioral approach (CBA) intervention in reducing CSA and burnout among professional soccer players.
Methodology: A pre-experimental study with pre- and post-evaluation was conducted, involving 19 male professional soccer players. Burnout and CSA were assessed. The intervention consisted of eight group sessions using a cognitive-behavioral approach.
Results: A reduction was observed in each subscale after the intervention: reduced sense of achievement (M = 15.28, p = .684); devaluation of sports practice (M = 6.83, p = .406); physical and emotional exhaustion (M = 12.22, p = .117), as well as somatic anxiety (M = 10.67, p = .015), cognitive anxiety (M = 11.33, p = .026), and self-confidence (M = 17.17, p = .559).
Discussion: The results align with previous research that observed reductions following psychological interventions, although these were not statistically significant.
Conclusions: The CBA can be implemented in high-performance sports in Mexico, as it shows positive results in addressing CSA and burnout.
