Abstract

The study aims to identify and understand the consequences of sedentary behavior on the psychosocial well-being of the elderly with low levels of physical activity. Participated in the study 14 elderly (M = 67 years old; PD = 1.4). The data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed according to the procedures of the thematic analysis. It was identified that the different dimensions of sedentary behavior (the type of sedentary behavior, interruption of sedentary behavior, uninterrupted sitting time, and frequency) can influence the psychosocial well-being of the elderly. Also, three indicators ( perception of improvement and maintenance of cognitive functions, perception of positive affective states, and perceived social interaction) associated with the promotion of psychosocial well-being of the elderly and two indicators (perception of diminishing social relations and perception of mental fatigue symptoms) that may contribute to its deterioration were identified. The results of this study can be useful for the development of interventions that aim to reduce the daily sedentary time of the elderly and increase the usual levels of physical activity.
