Explorando o impacto da identidade social e da dinâmica da equipe no comportamento de busca de ajuda em saúde mental entre atletas universitários: um estudo qualitativo

Resumo

Este estudo explora a influência da identidade social e da dinâmica da equipe nos comportamentos de busca de ajuda em saúde mental de atletas universitários. A pesquisa visa compreender como fatores como gênero, etnia e status social moldam as atitudes e ações dos atletas em relação aos cuidados de saúde mental.
Método: Utilizando uma abordagem de métodos mistos, incluindo discussões em grupos focais (FGD) e entrevistas aprofundadas, foram recolhidos dados de 30 atletas representando diversas disciplinas desportivas, garantindo uma representação equilibrada em termos de género, etnia e estatuto social. Resultado: Temático A análise revelou temas importantes: os atletas do sexo masculino enfrentavam um estigma substancial ao procurarem assistência de saúde mental, vendo-o como um sinal de fraqueza, enquanto as atletas do sexo feminino eram mais abertas e apoiadas por uma cultura de expressão emocional. Os atletas minoritários encontraram barreiras adicionais devido ao estigma cultural e à falta de serviços culturalmente competentes, enquanto a maioria dos atletas teve melhor acesso a recursos de saúde mental. Atletas de alto estatuto sofreram pressão para manter a sua imagem, o que os levou a relutar em procurar ajuda, enquanto os atletas de baixo estatuto enfrentaram desafios no acesso a recursos, apesar da sua vontade de procurar ajuda. A dinâmica positiva da equipa, caracterizada pelo apoio e pela comunicação aberta, facilitou o comportamento de procura de ajuda, enquanto a dinâmica negativa da equipa, como o bullying e a falta de confiança, criou barreiras. Conclusão: O estudo destaca a necessidade de intervenções direcionadas que abordem necessidades específicas com base no género, etnia e estatuto social, promovam a literacia em saúde mental e promovam ambientes de equipa de apoio. A investigação futura deve centrar-se nos efeitos a longo prazo das intervenções de redução do estigma, nos serviços de saúde mental culturalmente adaptados e no impacto da dinâmica da equipa ao longo do tempo. Estas descobertas fornecem informações valiosas para o desenvolvimento de sistemas eficazes de apoio à saúde mental para atletas universitários.
