The aim of the research was to describe characteristics of cardiac variability and lung function, as well as to analyze their correlation in the context of Paralympic athletes in the process of sports initiation. The methodology was approached from a quantitative and cross-sectional-analytical approach that included a correlational stage, the study population was 21 athletes with physical disabilities, from the sports disciplines: basketball, field tennis, swimming and Para powerlifting from the Valle del Cauca-Colombia region. Cardiac variability was measured at rest (cut-off time 6 minutes), using a POLAR H10 band, a POLAR VANTAGE V2 watch and the Kubios computer program and lung function by simple spirometry using the Easy One nnd spirometer, obtaining the following variables: Forced Vital Capacity, Forced Expiratory Volume in the first second, relationship of Forced Expiratory Volume in the first second and Vital Capacity Forced, Maximum Voluntary Ventilation and Slow Vital Capacity. The results showed that heart rate variability in the MEAN. RR (mean duration of the RR interval) reported decreased values for all sports disciplines, while lung function variables behaved similarly to the reference values of athletes without disabilities. In the correlation analysis, no association was found between the variables of Cardiac Variability and Lung Function in Para powerlifting athletes, the largest number of correlations were found in basketball, Para swimming and wheelchair tennis athletes. Conclusion: Novel findings that constitute a baseline that facilitates the understanding of cardiopulmonary variables in Paralympic athletes of sports initiation.
Keywords: cardiac variability, lung function, paralympic athletes, sports initiation, physical disabilities.
