Evaluation of physical performance in soccer: application of the Catapult GPS system over the course of a season

Abstract

Introduction: In professional soccer, evaluating physical performance in competitive contexts is essential to optimize preparation and performance. GPS technology enables the assessment of variables such as the distance covered at each speed range, allowing for an accurate and reliable characterization of match demands according to context.

Objective: Compare the physical demands of Boyacá Chicó F.C. players in home and away matches during the 2023 BetPlay I League.

Methodology: A quantitative approach was employed, using a non-experimental, longitudinal, and comparative design. Data were collected from 20 matches using the Catapult GPS system, analyzing total distance covered and different speed ranges by playing position.

Results: The results indicate that there were no statistically significant differences between home and away matches. However, defenders covered greater distances in home games (p = 0.007), and forwards showed a trend toward more high-speed efforts (>25 km/h) also when playing at home. These findings are consistent with previous research showing the influence of match location on physical performance, although the magnitude and direction of such variations may depend on the level of the opponent, tactical roles, and match context.

Conclusions: It is concluded that match location does not significantly affect overall physical performance, but it does lead to relevant variations depending on the player’s position, which highlights the importance of individualizing physical preparation according to the competitive context.
