Introduction: The execution of line breaks, the action by which an attacking player surpasses one or more defenders, is one of the most important offensive actions in Rugby XV, as it has been linked to achieving success.
Objective: The objective of this of this secondary analysis was to analyze the line breaks made by the Corteva Cocos team during the 2022/23 season, in which they finished as runners-up.
Methodology: A punctual/idiographic/multidimensional observational design was used to analyze all attacks by the Corteva Cocos team that reached the opponent's 22-meter zone in nine of the 14 matches played during the 2022/23 season. The observed behaviors were recorded using a specially designed instrument for this study.
Results: The polar coordinate analysis showed that line breaks were activated in attacks where more than six passes were completed, more than six players were involved, and the attack started with a scrum. No activation was found between line breaks and the scoring of tries.
Discussion: The results align with previous studies that highlight the relationship between line breaks, possession time, number of passes, and meter gain. However, no connection was found with try scoring, as suggested by various studies.
Conclusions: The information obtained is valuable for both researchers, advancing the understanding of the game, and coaches, in designing more effective training programs.
