Introduction. Physical exercise plays a fundamental role in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, especially in older adults. Regular practice has a positive influence on the lipid profile, contributing to improved metabolic health and quality of life.
Objective. Therefore, the objective was to analyze the effects of physical exercise on the lipid profile of older adults.
Methods. To this end, a quasi-experimental study was conducted in Neiva, Colombia, with a sample of 50 older adults who met the inclusion criteria, such as being between 60 and 80 years of age, female and/or male, and having no medical restrictions. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups of 25: a control group (aerobic exercise; n = 25) and an experimental group (functional training; n = 25). A pretest was conducted to assess the lipid profile, after which participants attended 36 training sessions, three times per week, with an average duration of 50 minutes per session. At the end of the intervention, a posttest was administered to identify changes in the measured variables.
Results. The results showed a statistically significant relationship in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels in the experimental group (p = 0.00). Likewise, this group also exhibited positive changes in the reduction of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels, although these were not statistically significant.
Conclusions. In this regard, it is concluded that physical exercise improves lipid profile variables such as high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and triglycerides after 36 training sessions.
