Introduction: Motivation has been considered a key element in participation in Physical Education classes and a good predictor of physically active individuals. The objectives of this study were to validate the Physical Education Motivation Questionnaire in schoolchildren in the Metropolitan Region of Chile and to determine the motivation in a sample of secondary school students.
Methodology: A quantitative study was conducted using a non-experimental., descriptive, cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 889 secondary school students of both sexes, with an average age of 13.8±1.6 years, who were given the Physical Education Motivation Questionnaire. The instrument used had adequate psychometric properties for the population surveyed.
Results: The analyses performed indicated significant differences (p<.01) for all study variables, finding higher levels of motivation and lower levels of demotivation in boys than in girls, that students from municipal schools reported higher motivation towards Physical Education classes, that motivation decreased as the school year progressed, and that students who practiced sport outside school were more motivated. Overall, the results were consistent with the evidence reviewed.
Conclusions: The Physical Education Motivation Questionnaire is applicable to the Chilean school population. Furthermore, it is necessary to consider these variables when designing and proposing activities for Physical Education classes, with the aim of generating greater motivation, particularly among girls.
