Resumen

Mental health disorders are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide with young adults in higher education being significantly affected and vulnerable. The educational environment is surrounded by stressors that can negatively impact students' mental well being. Identifying these stressors is crucial for developing corrective measures to mitigate their effects. The current study explores factors effecting students' mental health and the various coping mechanisms employed by students. An instrument was developed and validated to gather information on factors responsible for students' mental health-related disorders and coping strategies. A chi-square test was used to investigate the factors that accounted for students' mental health problems, coupled with various coping mechanisms, as well as the association between student characteristic and mental health problems. The study found a significant association between mental health disorders and gender (p<0.05), with female students reporting higher exposure to mental health-related problems than their male counterparts. No statistically significant difference was observed between the age categories and the mental health status of the students. However, there was a statistically significant difference between age categories and factors influencing mental health disorders (p<0.001), where late adolescents showed higher percentages of learning and personal problems, while young adults recorded higher percentages of financial and family problems and were more likely to be bullied by friends. The findings further revealed that mental health and coping mechanisms differed significantly across students according to their age categories (p<0.05). Young adults are more likely to take medication and seek medical help for mental health problems than late adolescents. These insights can serve as a compass guiding educational institutions, policymakers and mental health practitioners toward more targeted and efficacious strategies to address the pressing issue of mental health among college students
