Impact of a physical exercise program on people with severe mental illness

Introduction: Insufficient levels of physical activity are a significant factor in the overall burden of disease and have a significant impact on the health of people with severe mental disorders.
Objective: The aim of the study was to analyse the effects of a physical exercise programme on improving the physical and mental health of people with severe mental disorders receiving care in two healthcare settings.
Methodology: A multicentre study was conducted using a single-group design with pre- and post-intervention measurements. The sample consisted of sixteen participants diagnosed with a severe mental disorder. A 12-week physical exercise programme comprising two weekly sessions was implemented. Five physical fitness tests and three questionnaires were administered to assess changes in physical activity, quality of life and emotional changes following the intervention.
Results: Significant improvements were observed in upper and lower limb muscle strength, shoulder range of motion, physical activity levels and reduced anxiety levels between the pre- and post-intervention measurements.
Discussion: The results obtained were consistent with previous scientific evidence indicating that physical exercise-based interventions can lead to significant improvements in the physical and mental health of people with severe mental disorders.
Conclusions: Implementing a physical exercise programme is a viable strategy for improving physical fitness and helping to reduce anxiety symptoms in people with severe mental disorders.
