You won't quit surfing. Reflections on the motivations and social conditions leading to its practice in natural and artificial environments

This study explores the motivations and social conditions that drive surfing in contrasting environments: Sanxenxo and Madrid. A comparative qualitative approach was adopted with a sample of 24 surfers, selected through intentional sampling and the snowball technique. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted to collect data, analyzed through thematic coding. The results show that in Sanxenxo, the connection with nature, the influence of friends, and the surfing community are key motivations, while in Madrid, the search for urban escape and media influence predominate. Factors such as continuous enjoyment and community support are crucial for continuity in Sanxenxo, while in Madrid, logistical challenges and lack of time represent significant obstacles. The conclusions underline the importance of community support and emerging infrastructures, such as wave pools, in promoting and maintaining surfing practice. The comparison of geographical contexts highlights the adaptation of urban surfers through social networks and travel companies to overcome logistical barriers and the importance of a sense of belonging and social support in long-term adherence.
