Introdução: Las mujeres mayores tienden a tener mayor adiposidade que os homens da mesma idade, juntamente com menor massa e densidade muscular. Estes fatores aumentam o risco de deterioração da função física e de incapacidade.
Objectivo: Este estúdio examina os efeitos de um programa de boxe baseado em videojogos durante 8 semanas na massa muscular apendicular em mulheres de maior porte.
Metodologia: Neste estúdio, 30 mulheres maiores são atribuídas aleatoriamente a dois grupos: controlo e intervenção. O grupo de intervenção participa em sessões de boxe virtuais (30 minutos por sessão, 3 vezes por semana) durante duas semanas. Ambos os grupos realizam exercício aeróbico de baixa intensidade durante 15 minutos, cinco vezes por semana. Antes e depois da intervenção, todos os participantes são submetidos a uma análise de impedância bioelétrica para avaliar o seu índice de massa muscular apendicular.
Resultados: No grupo controlo, não se observaram ganhos significativos no índice de massa muscular apendicular após duas semanas de exercício aeróbio de baixa intensidade (p = 0,070). Pelo contrário, o grupo de intervenção apresenta um aumento significativo do índice de massa muscular apendicular, com um tamanho de efeito de 0,73 e significância estatística (p < 0,001). A alteração do índice de massa muscular apendicular é significativamente maior no grupo de intervenção em comparação com o grupo de controlo (p = 0,047).
Discussão: Este estúdio revelou que um programa de boxe baseado em realidade virtual durante 8 semanas, combinado com exercício aeróbico de baixa intensidade, melhora significativamente a massa muscular apendicular em mulheres de maior porte.
Conclusões: A adição de um programa de boxe virtual durante duas semanas pode aumentar o índice de massa muscular apendicular das mulheres de maior porte, medido através da análise de impedância bioelétrica.
