Introduction: Adolescent substance use is an important issue in community health that is affected by both behavioral and psychosocial factors.
Objective: The authors sought to investigate the roles of mental health, peer pressure, sport involvement, and exposure to interventions in relation to substance use, and to determine the efficacy of a multidimensional risk assessment model.
Methodology: A quantitative analytic design was used with cross-sectional data collection. Descriptive statistics, regression analysis, and model-based interpretation methods were applied to the relationships among variables to determine the major predictors of substance use.
Findings: The results showed that there was a strong negative relationship between mental health and substance use and a positive relationship between peer influence and increased risk, whereas sport participation appeared to have a moderate protective relationship, but with a range of variation in participants. There was a clear increase in risk substance use between low-, medium-, and high-risk groups based on risk stratification analysis.
Discussion: These findings are consistent with the available literature emphasizing the importance of psychosocial determinants in substance use practices, but the insignificance of intervention exposure suggests that program efficacy may be limited to implementation quality and alignment with psychological and social factors.
Conclusions: The results provide an indication that the reasons that lead to substance use are mostly interrelated psychosocial, and their prevention requires combined measures that would consider mental health, peer, and behavioral conditions.
