Sports retirement: Transition in professional mexican football players in third division

The process of transitions towards sports retirement is important to consider in the career of an athlete. The purpose of this investigation is to identify how prepared 22 soccer players (men) are to face their sports retirement, along with the evaluation of whether there are any significant differences between athletes who are exclusively dedicated to sports and those who split their time between study and sports. The participants of this study are individuals of ages 16 to 21 with an average of 18.18 years old. The Sports Retirement Adaptation Questionnaire (CARD) was used. In it, three dimensions are measured: (1) the accumulated human capital collected during the sports career, (2) the exclusive sports identification and (3) retirement planning. Also, the chi-square test was performed in order to identify if there are differences between those who dedicate themselves exclusively to sports and those who study and practice sports. The results indicate that these 22 soccer players will not have difficulties during their sports retirement process, although it would be important to ponder what adaptation tools or processes they think they have in order to have a proper transition or retirement. Finally, no significant differences were found between the two groups, those who only dedicate themselves to sports and those who study and practice sports.
