Sport in the school context: perception of support and the positive sporting experience of young athletes

The aim of this study was to verify the influence of developmental assets on the perception of experience in sport in young handball athletes, as well as to describe the characteristics of the training environments of these athletes. This is a quantitative, descriptive cross-sectional study. 156 young handball athletes participating in the state phase of the Youth School Games in the state of Mato Grosso were considered. For data collection the following questionnaire were utilised: semi-structured questionnaire developed for this research, with socio-demographic data related to the development context (characteristics, resources and support), the Youth Experience in Sport Questionnaire (YES-S) and the Developmental Assets Psychometric Questionnaire (DA). The results suggest that a positive perception of school is a predictor of a positive experience in sport. In addition, in the athletes’ perception, the contexts have limited infrastructure for sport and leisure, with gyms and multi-sports courts being the main spaces mentioned. In terms of sporting activity, the athletes are not involved in other sports and the average number of official matches played in the last 6 months was around four. Finally, the family was the main provider of emotional and financial resources, and did not participate directly in the activities and daily life of the athletes’ sporting lives. Conclusion: The school, in addition to being a space responsible for access to sports content, was perceived by the young people as an environment that supports the development of positive experiences in sport.
