Introduction: Sarcopenia is changing from mainly attributed to older population to increasingly impacts younger population. Early identification of individuals at risk for sarcopenia presents a critical opportunity for better prevention. To date, there has been an absence of sarcopenia risk assessments conducted among students in Indonesia, thus rendering the pertinent risk factors largely unexamined.
Objective: This study aimed to compare characteristics, skeletal muscle mass index, muscle strength, physical performance and risk of sarcopenia between trained and untrained students aged 15 to 25 years.
Methodology: A comparative study was conducted involving a group of 44 matched students, which divided into trained and untrained groups based on their physical activity levels. Evaluation encompassed the skeletal muscle mass measured using BIA (InBody-970), handgrip strength assessment, sit-to-stand test, sleep quality evaluation, screening for sarcopenia risk.
Results: Trained students displayed a markedly increased skeletal muscle mass index, superior handgrip strength, and faster sit-to-stand test completion times when compared to their untrained peers. Furthermore, sleep quality was notably superior within trained group of students.
Discussion: These findings are consistent with the current academic literature that accentuates the importance of physical training to the preservation if muscle mass and muscle performance. The physiological and psychological identified in individuals who engaged in training could be related to the improvement of hormonal responses, including the raising of growth hormone and endorphins.
Conclusions: Engaging in physical training serves to mitigate the risk associated with sarcopenia development. Notably, the incidence of sarcopenia was absent among all individuals who had training.
