Introduction: Attitudes and perceptions toward Physical Education (PE) represent one of the most important predictor factors associated with extracurricular physical activity levels in Primary Education.
Objective: To analyze the assessment of PE classes and its relationship with physical-sport habits in schoolchildren aged 10 to 12 years in the third cycle of Primary Education.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study with a sample of 1,303 participants aged 10 to 12 years. The Assessment Scale of Physical Education in Schoolchildren (E-VADEF-e) and the physical-sport habits dimension of the Assessment Scale of Acquired Healthy Lifestyles in Schoolchildren (E-VEVSA-e) were administered. Both scales are validated and show adequate reliability and validity indices.
Results: Student's t-tests indicated that boys show significantly higher values than girls in both subject assessment and physical-sport habits. However, ANOVA analyses revealed that higher subject valuation significantly increases practice habits in both sexes. Notably, a high valuation of PE multiplies the probability of active practice in girls by more than three.
Discussion: An incipient gender gap is evident in Primary Education. Subject valuation is decisive for sports adherence, highlighting the need to implement inclusive pedagogical models focused on students' psychological needs.
Conclusions: A positive assessment of PE is directly related to extracurricular practice, acting as a key protective factor in girls. Pedagogical renewal toward inclusive models is required to mitigate gender differences and consolidate active lifestyles from childhood.
