Abstract

Introduction: Research in football has increasingly highlighted the value of small-sided and conditioned games (SSCGs) for learning and skill acquisition.

Objective: This study aimed at how player density affects collective positioning and team spacing in junior football players.

Methodology: Twenty-two male players Under-14 years participated in two SSCGs formats (GK+4v4+GK and GK+5v5+GK) played on the same pitch (46m × 33m). Positional data were collected using 15Hz GPS units and used to calculate team width, team length, and team surface area. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and a two-way mixed-design ANOVA.

Results: The results revealed significant different (p≤0.05) in the width and surface area dimension for game formats and during attacking and defending phases. Specifically, greater team width during attack than defence and larger team surface area in the GK+5v5+GK format.

Discussion: The results indicate that manipulating player density were associated with collective spatial organization. The GK+5v5+GK format was associated with greater team length and surface area, whereas the GK+4v4+GK format provided more available space for player dispersion, leading to different emergent collective tactical behaviours.

Conclusions: Coaches can manipulate SSCGs to target specific tactical behaviours. The larger format was associated with greater team length and team surface area, whereas the smaller format was associated with more compact team organisation. These findings help practitioners alter player spacing to design more effective training programs.
