Introduction: the incorporation of artificial intelligence tools into higher education has transformed learning processes and academic dynamics, generating implications for lifestyle habits, sedentary behavior, and the emotional well-being of university students.
Objective: to analyze the relationship between the use of artificial intelligence tools, sedentary behavior, physical activity, and emotional well-being among Colombian university students.
Methodology: a quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional, and correlational study was conducted with university students selected through convenience sampling. Instruments were administered to assess the use of artificial intelligence tools, sedentary behavior, physical activity, and emotional well-being. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlations, analysis of variance, multiple linear regression models, and mediation analysis.
Results: the use of artificial intelligence tools was positively associated with sedentary behavior (r = .42, p < .001) and negatively associated with emotional well-being (r = -.26, p < .001). Likewise, sedentary behavior showed a significant negative association with emotional well-being (β = -.38, p < .001), whereas physical activity exhibited a significant positive relationship (β = .29, p < .001). The mediation model confirmed that sedentary behavior acted as a mediating variable between artificial intelligence use and emotional well-being (β = -.16, p < .001).
Discussion: the findings are consistent with previous research highlighting the role of digital habits, physical activity, and sedentary behavior as key determinants of emotional health among university students.
Conclusions: it is concluded that sedentary behavior mediates the relationship between the use of artificial intelligence tools and emotional well-being, highlighting the need to promote active lifestyles and balanced technology-use strategies in higher education.
