Purpose: To examine the effect of detraining following a school-based physical education program (PROFIT-BR) on physical fitness in children of different ages.
Methods: One hundred children aged 6–9 years (n = 50) and 10–11 years (n = 50) participated. The PROFIT-BR program was implemented during physical education classes for 19 weeks. Detraining was assessed after a 12-week summer vacation. Body mass index, waist-to-height ratio, cardiorespiratory fitness, abdominal strength, upper and lower limb power, agility, speed, and flexibility were evaluated. Generalized estimating equations examined time × age interactions.
Results: Children aged 6–9 years improved cardiorespiratory fitness and agility during training but showed a decline in cardiorespiratory fitness after detraining. Children aged 10–11 years improved their agility during training but showed declines after detraining. Regardless of age, abdominal strength and upper and lower limb power improved during the training period.
Conclusion: Detraining effects varied according to age and physical fitness component following a school-based physical education intervention.
